The Great Clock dial on Elizabeth Tower.
The Great Clock dial on Elizabeth Tower.

All the hands and dials on each of the four faces of the Great Clock have been refurbished and re-painted in the original colours of Royal Prussian Blue.  Each hour hand is made of Bronze.  The four minute hands are made from hollow copper.  Originally all hands were made in Iron but were too heavy - and could not keep the proper time - so they were replaced.  All of the Gold on each face  as well as the surrounding areas was re-painted and then re-gilded.  There are three hundred and twenty four pieces of hand-blow opal glass in each clock dial, all made by Chance Brothers of Smethwick.

There are thousands of photos of Elizabeth Tower. Many people still call it Big Ben, even though that is a nickname for the Great Bell - the biggest bell in the Belfry of Elizabeth Tower.

You can go to iStock for some free photos, as well as lots that cost to download.
